Alice Castle is a longterm resident of south east London. Her murder mystery series is firmly set in the capital’s deep south. Whether amateur sleuth Beth Haldane is hitching a break-neck ride in DI York’s police car or stuck in the endless traffic of the South Circular, it is the street scenes and gritty reality of Dulwich, Catford, Camberwell, Peckham, Norwood, Herne Hill and Forest Hill that form the backdrop to her investigations.
1. Death in Dulwich
The first book in the series is centred around Dulwich Village, where Beth’s son, Ben, goes to the Village Primary school and Beth herself lands a job at the prestigious Wyatt’s School nearby. Beth lives in Pickwick Road, just off Dulwich Village’s main street, and her friend Katie has a house on the elegant and leafy Court Lane, which stretches from the Village, past Dulwich Park and up to Lordship Lane, which leads out of Dulwich into Sydenham and Forest Hill.
2. The Girl in the Gallery – out now!
Beth Haldane’s second outing is in The Girl in the Gallery, which is set in the fictional Wyatt’s Picture Gallery, based on the world famous Dulwich Picture Gallery. Dulwich Picture Gallery is celebrating 200 years of showing art to the public this year. Its collection includes works by Rembrandt, Poussin, Gainsborough, Romney and Tiepolo, amongst other masterpieces. In the course of the book, Beth goes to King’s College Hospital, in Denmark Hill, Camberwell.
3. Calamity in Camberwell – publication date 13th August 2018
The third book in the series is set in Camberwell, close to Dulwich but a bit more bohemian in feel. Beth’s good friend, Jen Patterson, lives here following her divorce from spineless two-timing Tim. Jen has just remarried, after a whirlwind courtship, but Beth is beginning to sense that all may not be going well with husband number two.
4. Homicide in Herne Hill – publication date 3rd October 2018
Beth’s fourth mystery takes place among the bustling shops and businesses of Herne Hill, just down the road from Dulwich Village. The area is picking itself up after a major flood a few years ago and Beth’s new friend, Nina, has just got a job at the solicitor’s, working for smooth and successful Paul Potter. But is everything going quite as well as it seems?
