Bovary for beginners

I think of all my regrets, my sharpest is not reading Flaubert’s Mme Bovary when I was younger. Somehow, I missed it out, though I’ve waded through far more than my fair share of classics. I read it only a couple of years ago when I suggested it to my book group. By that time it was far too late.

The book’s message is simple. Don’t waste your time waiting for the ship on the far distant horizon to come and rescue you. Nothing and no one can save you – except yourself. And don’t fritter money away on soft furnishings. Get a job – and get a life.
